Bristol City vs Wigan Prediction & Betting Tips: Latics Dreadful Away Form to Continue at Ashton Gate

Bristol City climbed up to fourth in the table with a last-gasp victory over Charlton on Wednesday night and the Robins will be aiming to make it back-to-back victories when they host Wigan on Sunday afternoon. The Latics are still having problems on their travels and conceded a last-gasp goal to Graeme Shinnie in midweek. Can they pick up a rare away success at Ashton Gate?

Bristol City vs Wigan Preview – 27/10/2019 Championship
Lee Johnson had a smile as wide as the Clifton Suspension Bridge following Wednesday’s last-gasp victory over the Addicks. Bristol City had fallen behind to a Macauley Bonne strike, but netted twice in the last 15 minutes to secure an important three points. Josh Brownhill’s injury time cracker turned the tie on it’s head and prompted the diminutive gaffer to celebrate effusively on the sidelines.
Although the Robins have been praised for their away form this season, their record at Ashton Gate isn’t bad either. They’ve lost just one of their first six games here and that came on the opening weekend of the season. They’ve also managed to keep clean sheets in three of those games and many sides are likely to leave this ground empty handed.
Wednesday’s victory ensured City didn’t slip to back-to-back defeats and it kept their promotion hopes on track (although it’s still early days).
Wigan have faced back-to-back East Midlands opponents with both games ending 1-0. They got the better of Forest at the DW to continue their fine home record before going down to a late Graeme Shinnie goal at Pride Park. Paul Cook described himself as ‘feeling physically sick’ after that midweek defeat and his side were arguably unlucky to not leave with something from the game.
The Latics have lost six of their last seven games on the road and their miserable away form has not improved from last season. They’ve failed to score in five of their last seven away matches although they haven’t conceded more than two goals since the end of August.
Wigan’s Goalscoring Woes on the Road
Paul Cook’s side haven’t scored on the road since September 14th and the Scouser will have been disheartened to see Kelle Roos put in one of his finest performances of the campaign on Wednesday night. Jamal Lowe had chances to find the back of the net, but the former Portsmouth player couldn’t fire his side in front.
They failed to score in eight of their opening 14 matches last season and it’s an area which doesn’t appear to have been addressed. With Bristol City having conceded just three goals in their last five home matches, it could be difficult for them to break through here.
Both Teams to Score? No is 11/10 with Betvictor and this would have landed in ten of Wigan’s last twelve games.
Famara Diedhiou to Test Wigan’s Defence
Although he’s far from prolific, Famara Diedhiou is a real handful and he netted his third goal of the campaign in midweek. With Benik Afobe out for the season, Bristol City are relying on their frontmen to make up the deficit and Diedhiou appears to be doing his bit.
Some fans aren’t convinced and he can look a little lazy on occasions, but he wins an average of 4.5 aerial duels per match and has been awarded the MOTM on two occasions.
Although his return of three goals in 590 minutes of football could be improved, he coiuld be the man to test this Wigan back-line. He’s 8/5 with Betfred to score anytime.
