Marseille vs Lille Predictions

Marseille has a disastrous December and they brought their poor form into 2019. OM are now sat in seventh and they are still within shooting distance of the top four but their 1-0 victory against ten-man Caen will hardly have sides above them quaking in their boots. Although they are generally stronger on their own patch, they’ve not won here since November 11th and they could struggle against a Lille side who are full of confidence. They’ve won five times here but they’ve only beaten the likes of Caen, Dijon, Toulouse and Guingamp and it’s hard to have confidence in them here despite their attacking riches.

Lille have been excellent in recent weeks and they are one of the surprise packages of the season. They have won each of their last three away games and came back from a goal down to beat Amiens seven days ago. They are a touch unpredictable but have a number of players in-form such as Nicolas Pepe and Lebo Mothiba. Nicolas Pepe has been in good form for the visitors and he’s netted in each of his side’s last three away games. He now has 13 Ligue 1 goals for the campaign and I think he can find space amongst a Marseille defence which rarely keeps a clean sheet. Lille have been involved in some very entertaining games in recent weeks. There have been 15 goals in their last four matches and I don’t expect this to be a low-scoring cagey affair. 13 of their 21 games have ended with Over 2.5 Goals this season and half of their away matches have gone the same way. Marseille have seen 60% of their matches end with three or more goals and although they managed to keep a clean sheet against goal-shy Caen, I don’t expect them to keep Lille off the score-sheet. There’s plenty of individual talent on each side and I suspect we’ll see plenty of goals on Friday night.

Marseille’s home form is decent but they’re going through a rough patch. They can be backed at 23/20 and I expect them to be popular on Friday night. Lille can be backed at 23/10 whilst the draw may also be popular at 12/5.

In-form Florian Thauvin leads the way in the first goalscorer market and can be backed at 4/1 to score the opener the hosts. Nicolas Pepe is next in the betting at 11/2. Clinton Njie can be backed at 13/2.
