When City were beaten by Newcastle United at the end of January it’s fair to say that most pundits were of the opinion that they’d surrendered the Premier League title there and then. Fast forward less than six weeks and somehow Pep Guardiola’s men are back at the top of the tree – having won every game across all competitions since. That was obviously the wake-up call the Citizens needed and although their detractors may claim that recent back-to-back 1-0 wins signal that the pressure is getting to them, the fact remains that those crucial six points have put them firmly back in the driving seat.

They take on a Watford side in decent form, with the only real blip of late ironically coming against City’s biggest challengers Liverpool. With top spot now back in their grasp, I’m expecting the home side to put the Hornets to the sword on Saturday evening and really make a statement. They’re even money to win by three goals or more which would also represent another step towards reaching 100+ league goals for a second successive campaign.

There’s not much that hasn’t been said about Sergio Aguero since his arrival almost a decade ago, with the superlatives rightly coming thick and fast. The Argentinian striker equalled Alan Shearer’s record for Premier League hat-tricks not so long ago and looks nailed on to reach an unprecedented dozen before the season is out. Once again in familiar territory at the top of the goalscoring charts, Aguero has maintained the scintillating form that has restricted Brazilian internatinal Gabriel Jesus to infrequent appearances from the bench. Given the hot streak that the former Atletico forward is currently on, I’m amazed that bookies are offering odds of greater than 2/1 on him scoring two or more here. Bet365 have priced an Aguero brace at 9/4 which looks massive – particularly when Watford are a long way off being one of the division’s top sides.

Only one team has left the Etihad with three points this season and so it won’t come as shock to hear that I’ve got reservations about Watford’s chances of repeating that feat. Sure, the Hertfordshire-based club are having a good season but with City seemingly back in the rhythm it would take a brave man to back against them putting Watford away.

A big win here would certainly put Liverpool under more pressure as they adjust to the transition of being leaders to chasers, and I see no reason why Pep’s men can’t deliver. There are no question marks over their attacking credentials and the mind-blowing goal difference built up so far will only become greater with each passing week. You can get 3/1 on City winning this one by three or four goals to nil, which looks even more attractive than it ordinarily would due to their timely habit of keeping clean sheets.
