Premier League Attendances 2018-19 – How full was each stadium?

Manchester City have been crowned the Premier League champions again, but which Premier League fans filled their teams stadium the most? We take a look at the average attendances as a % of the stadium’s capacity below.

It was another tremendous season in England’s top flight, with the title race going down to the last game of the season and Cardiff City fighting hard before eventually dropping straight back to the Championship. Liverpool and Man City were dominant on the pitch, but which fans filled their teams stadiums on the most regular basis?

Premier League Attendances 2018/19 – % of Capacity

Which sides filled their stadium the most in the top flight this season? To get these capacities, we have taken the average attendance of each side over their 19 home matches and took this as a percentage of the stadium’s capacity.

A total of 14,503,954 fans attended Premier League matches this season compared to 14,552,748 last season. Cardiff, Fulham and Wolves were the newly promoted sides.

 

20. Bournemouth – 92.96%

Average Attendance – 10,532

Despite having the smallest Premier League stadium, AFC Bournemouth’s average attendance was just 10,532 last season, 92.96% of the capacity of the Vitality Stadium. Their matches at home were certainly entertaining at times, but Eddie Howe’s side couldn’t draw in capacity crowds.

 

19. Southampton – 93.07%

Average Attendance – 30,139

The Saints were in danger of relegation for large parts of the season but new manager Ralph Hasenhüttl guided them to safety. They have the 11th largest stadium in the Premier League but struggled to get to capacity, averaging 30,139 fans per game.

 

18. Burnley – 93.57%

Average Attendance – 20,534

Another side who looked destined for the Championship for large parts of this season were Sean Dyche’s Burnley. They started their campaign in the Europa League qualifying so that didn’t help, and their average attendance was 20,534 across the 2018/19 campaign.

 

17. Cardiff City – 94.29%

Average Attendance – 10,650

Newly promoted Cardiff struggled throughout the season and finally lost the battle against relegation with a couple of matches left. Neil Warnock set his side up well but it was tough to stay in the top flight on their show-string budget. The fans turned out regularly despite the poor results though.

 

16. Huddersfield Town – 94.70%

Average Attendance – 23,201

Another side who have dropped back into the Championship are Huddersfield Town, who averaged 23,201 attendance across their 19 home matches this season. There was not much to cheer on the pitch, with just 10 goals scored at the John Smiths Stadium all season.

 

15. Fulham – 94.83%

Average Attendance – 24,371

There was a lot of promise for big spending Fulham this season, but they couldn’t match the expectation on the pitch and dropped back into the Championship. Their small stadium was around 1,000 seats from capacity based on the official stats for their attendances.

 

14. Tottenham – 96.51%

Average Attendance – 54,216

This one is a bit of an anomaly in that we’re basing Tottenham’s attendances as an average of their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium rather than Wembley, where their % capacity was down as 64% due to the 90,000 seats at the National Stadium. 13. Wolves – 96.82%

Average Attendance – 31,030

Newly promoted Wolves treated their fans to a memorable season, that has ended with them qualifying for the Europa League thanks to their seventh place finish. Their average attendance was 31,030 and their fans seen great results against the top six sides including a draw with Champions Man City.

 

12. West Ham – 97.23%

Average Attendance – 58,336

The Olympic Stadium is the fourth biggest ground in the Premier League, with a capacity of 60,000, and West Ham didn’t struggle to fill the majority of that, with their average attendance being the third highest in the top flight behind Manchester United and Arsenal.

 

11. Crystal Palace – 97.63%

Average Attendance – 25,455

The Palace fans are widely accepted as some of the best home fans in the country, and Selhurst Park was 97.63% full this season. Roy Hodgson’s side had an indifferent season on the pitch, ending the campaign in 12th place after a strong finish.

 

10. Newcastle United – 97.64%

Average Attendance – 51,212

The St James’ Park faithful are understandably frustrated with the current ownership of Mike Ashley, but that didn’t stop an average of 51,121 fans attending their home games this season. Newcaslte finished 13th after a very poor start to the campaign.

 

9. Watford – 98.12%

Average Attendance – 20,016

FA Cup finalists Watford enjoyed a great season, finishing in 11th after looking likely for a top eight finish for large parts of the campaign. Their capacity is just 20,400 at Vicarage Road making it the second smallest stadium in the league.

 

8. Manchester City – 98.39%

Average Attendance – 54,130

Champions Manchester City had an average attendance of 54,130 this season, despite all the claims that they can’t sell out the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side play some of the best football in the world and they lost just once at home all season, against Crystal Palace.

 

7. Leicester City – 98.70%

Average Attendance – 31,851

In a difficult season for Leicester off the pitch in which their owner was killed in a helicopter crash outside the stadium, the fans were still attending the King Power Stadium in their numbers, with an average attendance of 31,851, a slight increase from last season.

 

6. Everton – 98.87%

Average Attendance – 38,780

Despite having to watch their neighbours Liverpool challenge for the Premier League title and get into another Champions League final, Everton fans were still filling Goodison Park week in week out. They had impressive home wins against Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

 

5. Chelsea – 98.98%

Average Attendance – 40,437

It took the Chelsea fans a while to warm to their new manager Maurizio Sarri, but a third placed finish and a Europa League final have helped the Italian. The Stamford Bridge crowd were their to support their side week in week out though.

4. Brighton – 99.22%

Average Attendance – 30,426

Despite a shocking end to the season that almost resulted in relagtion, Brighton fans will still filling the AMEX Stadium. Their average attendance was just 250 below the capacity of 30,666.

 

3. Liverpool – 99.23%

Average Attendance – 52,938

They fell just short in the Premier League title race and the Anfield crowd were piling into the stadium every week. Jurgen Klopp’s side went unbeaten at home all season, losing just once in the whole campaign to eventual winners Manchester City.

 

2. Arsenal – 99.40%

Average Attendance – 59,899

Arsenal take second spot in the average Premier League attendances table but this one is quite hard to believe. According to the stats, the Emirates Stadium’s average attendance this season was only 900 short of capacity.

 

1. Manchester United – 99.49%

Average Attendance – 74,498

The biggest Premier League stadium in the country also produced the biggest average attendance, and the biggest % of full capacity. A poor season on the pitch didn’t stop Old Trafford filling up each week but the side could only finish sixth in the table, so there will be no Champions League football next season.
